This is based on a dream I had about a week ago, and it conveys an emotional metaphor filled with symbolism and imagery in order to provoke the deepest thoughts of the reader. I chose the title because I wanted to use this poem to portray my thoughts on a series of personal events in my life going on right now.
It explains how in sleep, the mind can go just about anywhere, and the lack of control that is involved with the natural process of sleep induced hallucination sends our minds on, for lack of a better term, an acid trip. There, In the dream world, we can be reminded of our burdens, our dreams, our fears, or our hopes.
In this particular scenario, two clocks are used to represent the life span of the dream and the dreamer within the dream itself. The person sleeping feels drowned and bewildered by their surroundings. Confused and scared, they feel the end approaching-and suddenly they wake up, that cold sweat lining their pale skin in the night. All they can really do is return to sleep, surrendering control once again, to their deepest imaginations.
Now then, THAT it is the literal explanation of the poem...My purpose behind writing it is that this entire holiday break has been truly awful...it could be a lot worse, but things just kind of suck right now. I chose the title, “Free Spirit Fail Safe” because I wrote this in thoughts of my closest friends and my wonderful girlfriend. We as humans sleep, not only to replenish our bodies and minds, but to escape from reality for a short time. Hence, my friends and I are all for the most part and usually, free spirited folk, and sleep is just a way for us to escape the hells of our personal lives, which right now are under tremendous stress.
